If you have not heard already, the +Miami HEAT have reclaimed their former number two overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft in Michael Beasley by signing him to a non guaranteed contract. Beasley was recently let go by +Phoenix Suns after getting arrested over the Summer for possession of marijuana. One can only hope that this will be the opportunity where this troubled talent will finally get it together and live up to the promise and potential that he exuded when he played for +Kansas State University. In his sole college season, Beasley led the nation in scoring and looked as if he would be a surefire star upon being drafted in the +NBA; however, since playing in the league for five years, he has shown little if any of the dominance that he shown in college.
This move is reminiscent of another reclamation project that later prove very profitable for both partners involved. Just like Beasley, +Andray Blatche was a talented young player whose poor choices led him to be released from his team, the +Washington Wizards; however, he found redemption on a team that picked up for next to nothing in the +Brooklyn Nets. Blatche went on to have an excellent season with the Nets giving Wizards GM Ernie Grunfeld a huge helping of crow to choke on given the fact that he still has to pay Blatche for playing on another team. The same can happen to Beasley as he will be on a championship team with superstar role models and a more professional winning culture. The Suns will then be losing two fold as they will be paying 9$ million to this guy and still remain a losing team.
So what do you think of this turn of events? Will Beasley come out to have a breakout year for the Heat. He certainly gives the team an additional talented and athletic scorer to go along with an already deep bench consisting of +Ray Allen, +Shane Battier, +Greg Oden, and +Norris Cole to name a few. And if he manages to at least not get caught with weed, he might just have a long fruitful professional basketball career. He's not even 25 yet and he has still plenty of room to develop into the player that many hoped that he will be; however, if he messes up this time, he may just not have another chance.
You can catch more of +JRSportBrief and his keen insights right here on +Slap Dog Hoops and don't forget to stay tuned as SDH will coming out soon with its preseason Worst to First Countdown in the coming weeks. For now, let's say a prayer to JR and hope he does not contract leprosy or some other God forsaken ailment in his trip to India.
